BOD Members Walk Out on Homeowners

Except for BOD member Tony Ficano, the other board members, Bud Hickman, John Durso and Evelyn Graham, walked out of the Friday night SBC Homeowners' dinner. The dinner was hosted by Lee Rawcliffe for all SBC homeowners that had already arrived for the canceled annual meeting. Along with dinner was the opportunity to meet the candidates and to ask board members questions. While asking the first question, tempers flared between Bud Hickman and Dennis Wolterding. After a brief exchange of words, Mr. Hickman left the stage area and eventually left the restaurant. Mr. Durso left soon after. As homeowners continued to ask questions, Mr. Ficano, Mr. Rawcliffe and Mr. Wolterding, a past BOD member, handled most of the answers. Towards the end of the evening, I was asked to come forward, representing the HAC. Mrs. Graham was observed leaving the restaurant during my presentation. After the dinner/meeting concluded, homeowners were puzzled by the exodus of their board members.

Dear SBCHAC Readers:

U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Louis Brandeis, is famous for his maxim that "Sunlight is the Best Disinfectant". Judge Brandeis is referring to the need for openness and honesty in the dealings of governments and organizations--a concept now often called "transparency".

We are all indebted to Terry Hamilton for this Blog and his accurate reportage of positions, persons and events at the Sands Beach Club Resort.

And, yes, the BOD members, save Mr. Ficano, walked out exactly as Mr. Hamilton reports.

Your Fellow Homeowner in Residence,

Dennis Wolterding

Concerned Phase I owner said....

My husband and I are full owners of a Condo in Phase I. We are extremely upset with the comments posted on this blog about our current BOD and other issues about the voting rights for timeshare owners. The current BOD has worked hard to maintain and improve SBC as we know it today and deserve a lot of credit. I think this blog needs to be more “fair and balanced” with the respect to the current BOD and the people running to be a board member. The voting issue is being reviewed by a judge and may go to trial soon therefore this issue needs to be put to bed. Let the attorneys and/or judge decide the right way to count timeshare votes and in the meantime keep our comments to ourselves. Even though we did not attend the dinner the other night hosted by Mr. Rawcliffe, we understand that heated discussions between BOD members and past BOD members and others got out of hand. This led current BOD members no choice but to leave with their dignity. We do not condone such behavior and it shows the true colors of some of the people running for the board. We would like to keep SBC a family resort and hope that all owners feel the same way. We feel that Mr. Rawcliffe intends on changing the SBC into a resort similar to Sands Ocean Club. This is evident in the support he is giving to some members running for the board and feel that he has ulterior motives in managing the SBC property. Please read all the mail that was sent to each owner over the past weeks and I think you will come to realize like us the real intention of Mr. Rawcliffe and his followers.

I am posting this after having read Terry Hamilton's comments on Lee Rawcliffe's dinner Friday night.
THE TRUTH: I DID NOT leave during Terry Hamilton's presentation. I made an effort to visit the tables at the dinner of the few homeowners that were present. My husband and I were seated at a table with homeowners that we met in July. Dinner was over and they were ready to leave and the comment was made to wait until Mr. Hamilton finished his presentation. At that point Tony Ficano took the microphone and that is when we left.
I did not walk out as reported by Terry Hamilton and Dennis Wolterding.

My apologies to Mrs. Graham for not being completely accurate on the exact time she left the room. I was just aware that she left while I was still up front and other homeowners thought she had left during my presentation.

My point in the original post was that even though my presentation had concluded and the meeting was coming to an end, homeowners were still present and continued to ask questions. It would have seemed appropriate for BOD members to be present until all of the near 25 homeowners were gone. Especially for the homeowners who wasted their time and money by traveling to the last-minute-canceled annual meeting. At least we had a beautiful weather weekend.

I feel badly for Mrs. Graham, Mr. Durso and Mr. Ficano for having to deal with a situation from 2004 that they had no involvement in. I hope this whole mess will soon be resolved and we can again move forward.

My husband and I have been full owners of a condo in Phase II for about a year and a half now. We are wondering what we have gotten ourselves into! We cannot believe that grown people cannot act in a more mature and respectful manner. From what we have read and found out through conversations with others, we feel our HOA is in a pretty good position and for this we credit current and recently past Board Members. We pay down our debt (not just interest) as does Sands Ocean Club. We have a strong reserve of cash. Our building seems to be in good repair while Sands Ocean Club does not. Our restaurant/bar was a nightmare this year and it's our understanding that Mr. Rawcliffe owns/runs this area of our resort. If the restaurant issue in our resort this year is any indication of what we can expect from Mr. Rawcliffe, then we don't want any part of him. I was present in the lobby a few times when the desk personnel sent renters to the Ocean Club for meals. It is enraging that we/our guests/renters could not get a meal at our restaurant for most of the year and that people were being sent down the road! These people will not rent from us again next year, that's for sure. And we can thank Mr. Rawcliffe for that! Our Laundry rooms are shabby (again, owned by Mr. Rawcliffe) and our stairways are bleak. We are in agreement with the thinking that we should let the lawyers and the judge come to a decision on the counting of votes for the timeshares and would hope that the candidates running for the Board/current Board members conduct themselves in a manner befitting adults. You should all have the best interests of the Sands Beach Club Homeowners at the forefront-noone else, nothing else-the Homeowners. There should be no other agendas, period!
